Minor Makeover: Website Edition
I’ve just rolled out a minor makeover to the blog. It’s really nothing extreme or significant, basically just tidying up the header to make it more compact, neat and attractive. You might not even notice it but hopefully it all helps separate and distinguish where the header and navigation end and where the content begins. I’ve also added a swish stone-affect-type-background thing (technical term) which is very slick… although being slightly colour blind I can’t see it very well. My designer buddy assures me it’s awesome though.
I’ve still got a bit of work to do on the tagging, related posts and comment boxes to try and make them a bit more obvious and useful. Then, after it, it’s looking at the right hand sidebar and footer to try and funkify them a bit. Finally, I’ve got an alternative colour selection for the banner – red on green as oppossed to green on blue – which I might test out at some point. I like the green banner though. See earlier comment about being colour blind.
Of course, if you find any bugs or weirdness, give me a shout. The design should be compatible with all browsers although I haven’t tested it in Google Chrome. It may also look a little… cutdown… in IE6. But that’s just the Gods punishing you for using that browser anyway.
If you have any comments about the design or suggestions for improvement, please let me know.
P.S. I will get a favicon soon. I promise!

It looks very good in Chrome, and it is a very nice background image, this blueish stone. The whole page is 100% functional in Google Chrome. I am using Chrome all the time, I just love the minimalist design, no huge browser bars blocking the upper regions of my already very limited (height wise) widescreen monitor.
Yep, Chrome is a go for me, too.
I like it, Gordon. I’m still jealous of you and your designer buddy.
I’m tempted to go with the single sidebar for my blog, too. But I really like the double. I’m torn. I don’t know what’s “best” or if there even is a “best.”
Either way, I do like your design very much, and the stone texture is very nice.
Hehe. Well it helps that I work for a digital agency who make websites
I quite like the double sidebar… I dunno, it can be hard to decide. I think the double sidebar does help make things look a little more professional. I also love the fat footer.
One of my main concerns right now is cleaning up my posts footer. It seems a little jumbled with all the buttons and links right now. I may have to do some cleaning up over Christmas break.
Thanks for being my Chrome guinea pig
I’m a Firefox boy myself because of all of the useful addons it has and its standards compliance. I’ll need to install Chrome just to check it out though.
Be careful. I said that and now it’s my defacto browser. It’s just so fast compared to the other ones.
Does Chrome have any plugins or anything like Firefox has?
Yes, the site is working just great in Google Chrome.
Looking at it with some old fashioned browser (IE) i have to point out that the header is now double. first is the left an right “frame” and then BELOW that the “middle” part with the little plane.
Hmm, that’s no good. What version of IE are you using?
6.0
Yeah, I found the bug. It’s not doing it on my dev site for some reason, only the live. I’ll try to fix it ASAP. Thanks for the heads up!
You should definitely consider upgrading your browser though
Just wondering Gordon – have you tried my red version for the nav? I think that might work better
Otherwise looking awesome – cant wait to see the sidebars in action!
Cheers,
Designer Guybrush
Will give it a shot, you clever devil
