EVE Online.
I enjoy reading about newcomer’s experiences to EVE Online as it’s like watching a mouse trying to negotiate a maze in some crazy science experiment (my Physics classes at school were fun). With the game being so much more difficult to comprehend and master than most MMOs (I’ve been playing for a while now and still have absolutely no clue what I’m doing), it provides a lot more entertaining stories and thought provoking articles than other games, at least for me anyway. Give me the intelligent librarian over the bimbo any day.

It’s a pretty interesting time for politics at the moment (although when isn’t it?). A few days ago the Polish President was killed in a plane crash, last month the US saw a health care reform bill pass and last week the current political party in the UK (the Labour party) called a general election. It’s no surprise that politics affects us all but what has been surprising to me is just how people take an interest in it. You only need to check out blogs like Rock Paper, Shotgun to read their take on democracy and even a casual remark in a non-MMORPG post I wrote a couple of weeks ago sparked off a fascinating debate in the comments section. Seems that more people are interested in politics than I thought or, possibly more accurately, cared to notice.

I learnt a valuable lesson last night. It came to me when I was staring down the toilet bowl at 4am in the morning, the regurgitated taste of vodka tickling the back of my throat. Never, ever go on a drinking binge on an empty stomach, folks. The result has been a gut feeling like a toxic dump and a head feeling like a tribal African musician is playing the bongo drums inside my brains.

Unless you’ve got no interest in MMORPGs (which begs the question why you’re reading this blog) or have been living in some sort of lesser developed country during wartime, you’ll probably have heard about the changes coming to World of Warcraft with the Cataclysm expansion later on in the year. I’ve been following the drips of information we’ve been getting with great interest, not because I particularly care about my favourite class getting some exciting new ability but rather because I find it fascinating to see how the Blizzard developers are evaluating the worth of mechanics and abilities.

Non-MMORPG.
Here’s a little secret just between you and me: I’ve been having trouble performing lately. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking but it’s not that (in that area I perform like a chipmunk on a caffeine high). I’m actually talking about in a blogging sense and I guess I’ve just been feeling a little uninspired lately. Maybe it’s just a current dip with the MMORPG genre or a preoccupation with other things in my life but, whatever it is, I’ve decided to take action and try to shake things up a little. My solution? I’d like to write a guest post for your blog.

If I told you that I gained 22 levels in 3 minutes in World of Warcraft what would you say? Would you call me a liar, a crack pot, or a cheat? Maybe you’d just ask for my secret? Well, fret not young one, for herein below lies the magic formula…

Permadeath: the utter, permanent death of your MMORPG avatar. No resurrection, no resuscitation, bye bye, auf wiedersehen, sayonara etc, you get the picture. It’s one of those concepts that’s talked about in hardcore rants by forum trolls and occasionally threatened on us by crazy, mad scientist developers. We’ve all heard about the idea somewhere but never seen it anywhere. It is just a silly myth or could it actually work?
