Just think - one of these servers could have a gold star sticker on it.
There’s been a lot of discussion on blogs lately about the state of the Warcraft community and even some articles asking what developers could do to improve it and any other down-turning MMO communities in general. It’s a tough topic and the idea of maintaining orders and manners in a very accessible and popular game seems like an almost impossible task. However, in a comment on my ‘terrible community’ article, fellow blogger Mycroft suggested a beautifully simple solution: premium servers.

A lotta hoop-la about this about communities in MMORPGs or, more specifically, the community in World of Warcraft, all in response to Wolfshead’s controversial article. Man, I love a bit of hullabaloo in the morning. Of course, all of this pales in comparison to the iFairy, a magical robot which marries couples in Japan. Now that’s technological progress.

Sometimes R.E. Howard was inspired by Asian culture. And sometimes he just ripped it off completely.
I’ve been playing Age of Conan again since the new expansion Rise of the Godslayer came out about three weeks ago and thought it would be a good time to write up my impressions of how the game’s progressed since I left almost 18 months ago. Returning to this virtual world of Hyboria is a bit like hooking up again with that sultry Mexican temptress who you dumped after discovering she had the personality of a piece of wood. Well, the good news is that this fiery lady has had some schoolin’ and can now hold a pretty decent conversation over breakfast following a night of fast-paced combo action. Oh and I know.. me, blog, sex, chauvinism… I just count my lucky stars that my wife doesn’t read this crap.

Community in the old days involved sitting around for hours. Lots of long hours.
Unless you’re member of the Taliban on the run from the long arm of the Feds, you’re probably aware of the controversial article that veteran blogger Wolfshead wrote about his feelings towards World of Warcraft and how he blames Blizzard for damaging the genre. Of course his points are subjective but it’s a very interesting and enjoyable post nonetheless and hearing other people’s opinions and thoughts on subjects is part of the fun of reading blogs. While I don’t agree with everything Wolfshead said, the one thing we do completely concur on is just how bad World of Warcraft’s community is. In fact, it’s downright awful. If you have any doubt over this fact, I’d urge you to take a few days to try out another MMORPG and see what a real MMO community should be like.

I'm a hardcore tyrant with my copper ore monopoly
Now I’m no goblin but I have to admit that I’ve been enjoying my tinkering with sales and trades on the WoW Auction House a lot lately. In fact, combined with my trial of the Remote Auction House I’m turning into a bit of an amoral, gold-toothed, maniacal trader living for that adrenaline rush only red-blooded capitalism can give me. I check my iPhone frequently (must… resist… purchasing RHA… subscription), buy low, sell high and gleefully lap up the tears of the defeated. Gevlon would be proud.

New from Blizzard! The ability to post auctions whilst on the toilet!
The World of Warcraft Remote Auction House was announced the other week but as I was deeply engrossed in Age of Conan I never gave it much thought. However, since I’ve started a new Horde alt in WoW on Sunday to play with my bro and RL friend who’s returning to the game I’ve been on a quest to earn some low level cash and found myself visiting the AH quite a lot. Thus is seemed like the perfect opportunity to give Blizzard’s new Auction House app a whirl.

Human beings are strange creatures. For some reason we’re obsessed with collecting things, ticking all of the metaphorical boxes we can and generally progressing forward as fast possible. I suppose it’s quite admirable really and a testament to the tenacity and intellect of the human race.
