Why I’m Scared Of Geeks

Napoleon Dynamite

Defend yourself against crazy geeks with your leet bo staff skills

I’m a cool guy. That’s not bravado or arrogance talking, it’s just a plain ol’ fact. I’ve always been the cool kid, the one that all of the other nerds and dweebs looked up to and even now, in my advancing years, my coolness is intensifying rather than diminishing. The young bloods in my office look up to me like they’re Richie Cunningham and I’m the Fonz, waiting with baited breath for me to knock the SVN sever with my fist to get it started in the mornings. I was even the cool kid on my Computing course at University and the rest of the geeks used to tell of the legend about how once a real life girl actually talked to me. I suppose I can’t help it, I’m just that cool, definitely more Kirk than Picard.

Size Should Matter

A huge Ogre in Everquest 2

The Ratonga was referring to my height

An enjoyable post over at Tobold’s yesterday got me thinking about size in MMOs. I know I’ve probably said this before but I like being big. I’m big in real life, I’m big in games, it seems like a natural fit and, for the life of me, I just can’t bring myself to play small races. Who would possibly want to be a tiny little Gnome or Goblin when they could be a towering Orc or Ogre? And then there’s the Dwarf fetishists, those bizarre players who are obsessed with playing short and stout races, constantly cracking jokes about hairy women and putting on phony Scottish accents when they talk to you over Ventrilo. Ugh. Obviously there’s a demand and desire for the smaller races but to me it will always remain a mystery.

The Best Of The Rest: Why’d You Have To Go And Declare Independence Edition

Independence Day American Flag

The American Flag was created by a Brit. Probably.

Independence Day. Good film. Totally skyrocketed Will Smith’s career for one. Brent Spiner’s in it too, y’know. Hmm, I wonder what’s he up to these days? Oh yeah, it also marks some day when some bunch of colonials decided to break away from the Motherland and form some sort of democratic-country-thingy. Shame really. Imagine where America could’ve been now had it decided to stay within the United Kingdom. You’d all be sipping cups of tea from the finest china with your pinkies hanging in the air. But then I suppose we wouldn’t have had the film Independence Day. And that’s not a sacrifice worth making. Not in my book.

Here are your weekly links. Enjoy them well my pretties, for they’ll have to do you an another entire seven days… Read more →

Failure Should Really F***ing Hurt (But It Shouldn’t Be The Death Of You)

Inspired by all of the talk about death penalities in MMOs and the risk and difficulty it brings, I wanted to share an idea about about a type of failure that hurts like hell but doesn’t actually kill you…

The Backstory

When I first started work, over half a decade ago, I used to have terrible trouble sleeping at night. Not because of any health problems or disturbances but just because, one night, I wasn’t tired and couldn’t fall asleep. That single incident kicked off a vicious cycle in my head and I spent the next several months not sleeping simply because I used to lie awake at night worrying about not sleeping. See, I’m the latest in a long line of cronic worriers. My parents worry and their parents before them worried and their parents before them worried and so-on and so-forth for many hundreds and thousands of generations all the way back to Caveman Gor of clan We Fly Pterodactyls who used to lie awake at night worrying about which sabertooth tiger skin would go best with his loincloth for impressing the cave ladies.
