After watching War of the Worlds for a 5th time, the Protoss decided to create the Colossus
Yes, I’ll admit it, much of my spare time has been occupied by Starcraft 2 recently. I don’t play that many single player games these days (MMORPGs are a full time hobby after all) but every so often one comes along that totally absorbs me and proves a nice change of pace from the traditional fantasy MMO. SC2 has definitely seized my attention by grabbing me by the gonads, leaning into my face and snarling ferociously so I thought it would be nice to share my thoughts about it in review form. Of course, seeing as we’re all busy folk, I’ve decide to write everything in nice concise bullet points. Think of it as a review by tweets.

Quake level editor - slightly less complicated than brain surgery.
Although I haven’t messed around with map editors and developer tools in years, I used to be a big fan of creating my own resources for games. I was practically addicted to level editors for Doom, Quake, Command & Conquer etc when I was a kid and playing Starcraft 2 recently has brought a lot of those memories back and I’m just itching to create a new SC2 map (I’ve got a great idea for a 4 player scenario). It made me think of something though: much like these map editors, couldn’t we have tools for creating our own dungeon and raid instances in MMORPGs?

Aside from MMOs my other great passion has always been comic books (DC, Marvel, indie, you name it) and although you would’ve thought comic based MMOs were my ultimate fantasy I’ve always actually been rather skeptical of them. I played City of Heroes and Champions Online when they first came out but never thought much of them (even though by all accounts CoX has shaped up into a fun game) and for some reason I’ve just always had an inherent dislike to the mixing of the two together as I never felt that the core concepts of what would make a good comic book video game could exist in the MMO genre. Simply put, comic book MMOs plain don’t work.

Poster for the Korean film "The Good, The Bad and The Weird". Can you guess who is who?
It’s been another rollercoaster of a week both in the gaming world and my personal life. Starcraft 2 came out a mere six days ago (it feels like forever) and has been a bit of a hit by all accounts (no official news yet but word on street is that South Korea has suffered a 76.2% dip in productivity). I’m loving it so far. SOE also announced that they will be releasing a more expensive version of Everquest 2 designed specially to target new and unsuspecting players and have branded it as EQ2X, the X standing for “Extended Billing Plan”. Not that I’m bitter or anything, no sir. And finally I also had a merry little jaunt down to London to visit some Cockneys and collect my in-laws who are over visiting from Japan. So far I’ve managed to downplay my racial foot-in-mouth disease and have yet to spew some clichéd remark that offends their ancestors. Wait.
