The Best Of The Rest: Famous Louse Edition

Head Louse

The famous EA Louse. Not quite as famous as The Famous Grouse.

So of course the big news this week was the appearance of a anonymous blogger called EA Louse (it’s a play on the original EA Spouse name – apparently EA Grouse didn’t have the right ring to it) who proceeded to spill the beans on everything that went wrong at Mythic during the development of Warhammer Online. See, Louse was just told he’s going to be laid off and is, as one would imagine, a little disgruntled by the fact. His post provoked a huge reaction across the blog and gaming spheres (presumably because Cataclysm won’t be out for another couple of months and there’s nothing as exciting to talk about) and has drummed up plenty of drama. In other, less dramatic, news WoW patch 4.01 came out and yes, I’m still currently trying to download it all on my computers. Huzzah for things being easy (although I did discover that the new installer is far quicker than patching an existing installation – don’t ask how I know that because I will probably cry).

EVE Delivers Great Head

Minmatar Brutor Female

There is little need for hairdressers in New Eden

I’ve got to admit, when I first heard that EVE was updating it’s character protrait creation system in the Incursion expansion I was not expecting anything close to what CCP are releasing. I was, without a doubt, blown completely away.

I Love Low Level

Draenei vs Plant

An epic struggle of good vs plant unfolds

Even though I like to sometimes get on my high horse about old school games and mechanics of yesteryear, I’m a big ol’ softie at heart and, deep down, I absolutely adore frolicking around newbies zones with the extra special alt I’ve just created. After all of the stresses of guild management, raiding and loot ladder climbing, there’s something quite blissful about the starting levels of games. A day in noob town is like a day on the farm. Every kill is epic, every loot drop a fortune, every ding a parade. I love low level.

The Best Of The Rest: Cataclysmic Edition

Homeworld Cataclysm

Some kid, somewhere, is going to be bitterly disappointed on Christmas day.

This week’s been pretty exciting as it (finally) saw the announcement of the much anticipated Cataclysm release date. Love or hate WoW, December 7th is going to be a pretty big date in everybody’s calendar and going to be tremendously hard to ignore. Servers will crash, children will scream, parents will cry and the gates of Chaos shall be opened upon us all. In other, totally and completely unrelated news, DCU Online was delayed until early next year.

Anyhoo, this weeks BotR sees a rather random bunch of articles picked for their interest, wittery and entertainment. Expect chin stroking and cajones. Plenty of cajones.

WoW Phishing Scams Play On The Insecurities They Caused

Battle.net

Battle.net, the phisher's paradise.

Argh! For some ungodly reason I’m seeing quite an increase in the amount of WoW phishing scams in my inbox these days. I’ve had two in less than 12 hours and, the most annoying thing of all, is that they are becoming harder and harder to spot.

I consider myself no fool when it comes to surfing the web (safety first and all that) and am extremely paranoid about Internet security. Not only am I very careful about what I download but I also never ever follow any links directly out of an email especially when they relate to banking or World of Warcraft. This as-standard-precaution actually saved my virtual bacon last night.

DC Universe Online Delayed. Cataclysm Claims First Victim.

DCU Online - The Batcave

Chillin' with his homies in the Batcave. So much like Batman.

Remember how a few days ago I was shocked to discover that DCU Online was going to be released in less than a month, on the very day of November 2nd no less? Well, now it’s not. Nope, due to *cough* no apparent reason DC Universe Online has been delayed until “early 2011″. Oh coincidence, thy name is Cataclysm.

Yes, if you’ve managed to pick up on the subtle wittery that was plaguing this article’s title and first paragraph then you’ll probably have honed in on the fact that I’m blaming the imminent release of Blizzard’s next WoW expansion for this timely delay. Let’s be fair though, it’s a pretty logical conclusion to come to considering not only do Warcraft expansions have a tendency to dominate the industry and chew up any small fry MMO that happens to get in the way but also SOE announced the news a mere 24 hours after the official release date for Cataclysm was set. Hmmm indeedy.

Breaking News: Cataclysm To Release In 2010

Cataclysm - Worgen Background

Cataclysm will release in December. I think I just heard Bobby Kotick wet himself.

So yeah, Cataclysm has an official release date of 7th December… 2010. Crazy, I know. I’m actually still in mild shock at the hearing the news that it’s going to come out this year as I half expecting it to be delayed into 2011 after living through what has to probably be the longest beta in the history of mankind. I don’t even think those scientists beta test the microchips used in nuclear warheads that much. I feel like a proud dad getting ready to witness the largest MMO birth yet. Breathe in… 1 2 3… and breathe out.
