Free RIFT For Five Friends This Weekend

Rift Screenshot

I'll hand it to Trion, they certainly know how to appeal to their audience

So Trion emailed me this afternoon to promote their special “Allies of the Ascended” event this weekend which is essentially an opportunity for friends of account holders to play for free for 72 hours. And seeing as you’re all my friends (or disconnected cyber-fans with creepy voyeuristic tendencies, you choose) I’ve decided to share the key with you lovely people.

RIFT vs The Cookie Cutter Monster

Cookie Monster

The Cookie Monster. Teaching addiction to children.

In my previous post I wrote about how RIFT made me appreciate the class and talent design of World of Warcraft more than before – it’s all very streamlined and simple when compared to the huge amount of freedom, thought and decisions that RIFT offers. A nice little conversation sparked off in the comments section about whether or not this wealth of variety and option would reduce the appeal of following cookie cutter builds and I wanted to explore that thought a little more.

RIFT Makes Me Appreciate WoWs Class Design More

Rift Champion

Thunder! Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats, Ho!

I’m starting to warm to RIFT’s soul system. A lot. There’s something quite elegant and sublime about being able to change class on nothing more than a whim. I love being able to solo with my Champion and hack my opponents to pieces with my gigantic two-handed sword then quickly switch into a holy, shield-throwing Captain American wannabe Paladin to tackle some sudden rifts or tank for a group. And I haven’t even mentioned the options of exploring other diverse roles such as the animal loving (platonically) Beastmaster or the magic wielding Riftblade. Yes indeed, it’s a very flexible class system that fills me the comforting knowledge and sense that I will be satisfied with my Warrior for a long time to come yet. But I think I prefer WoWs class design more.

I Like Big Swords

Big Swords in Rift

Size matters

I can just imagine my Dad face palming as soon as he reads this headline. Oh how proud he must be of his well educated son who now spends his evenings coming up with childish innuendos and sexual euphemisms to write blog posts about. Still, if you’re having dirty thoughts then they’re probably your own as I’m being deadly serious. When I play MMOs I immediately pick melee classes and then go out of my way to find the biggest, meanest looking sword I can possibly find in order to proceed smacking the living daylights out of everything whilst giggling with glee. Does that make me weird? That was a rhetorical question by the way.

It’s Good To Be Geek

Geek Inside

Only geeks could mock an already geeky logo

When I was a teen I was very selfconscious of my geekness and used to downplay it around strangers and anyone of the opposite sex. It wasn’t as if I was I one of those guys who went around with a ponytail, long black trenchcoat and a Red Dwarf t-shirt quoting Monty Python all of the time anyway (although I was to encounter a fair share of them in later life, so many so in fact that I now have to restrain myself from immediately punching someone in the balls if they so much as utter the words “knights who say ni” anywhere near me) but I just figured, without much to back it up, that people didn’t like geeks. Especially girls.

All Excited For The Secret World

Secret World

"We're going to need a bigger gun"

Rock, Paper, Shotgun had a great preview of The Secret World last week. Developed by Funcom (or Failcom if you’re leet like me), of Anarchy Online/Age of Conan fame, it’s one of those forthcoming MMOs that hasn’t had a huge amount of attention recently but, when it does get in the spotlight, everyone seems to go crazy for it. I’m one of those folks.

When To Quit?

WoW - Cancel Subscription

Blizzard threaten a kitten every time someone quits

I wouldn’t say I was a big advocate for subscription models but I don’t have any problem with them and, to be fair, I’m not exactly a fan of the alternative either (I think F2P encourages game design for cash rather than quality… but that’s another blog post). The one thing I do struggle with when it comes to my subscription MMOs though is when to call it quits. I’ve barely logged into WoW for the last six weeks. Is it time to cancel?
