The Best Of The Rest: Hooked On Starcraft 2 Edition

Starcraft 2: Terrans

Choke point not blocked. Amateur. /rolleyes

Zergling rush. Protoss Photon Cannon cheese. Build orders. Choke points. Kekekeke. I’m slowly losing my sanity to Starcraft 2 multiplayer. Funny thing is, I can’t decide if I totally love the game or utterly detest it. I’m really not very good at it but my mildly competitive nature and stubborn streak is preventing me from giving up. I must conquer and it plagues my dreams. SCV 8, build barracks. 11, upgrade Command Center. 18, launch attack… I think my head’s going to explode.

I haven’t had much time to play MMOs the past seven days but that doesn’t mean the blogs have stopped churning out excellent and captivating articles. SCV 9, proceed with link love.

The Best Of The Rest: The Good, The Bad And The Cockney Edition

The Good, The Bad and The Werid

Poster for the Korean film "The Good, The Bad and The Weird". Can you guess who is who?

It’s been another rollercoaster of a week both in the gaming world and my personal life. Starcraft 2 came out a mere six days ago (it feels like forever) and has been a bit of a hit by all accounts (no official news yet but word on street is that South Korea has suffered a 76.2% dip in productivity). I’m loving it so far. SOE also announced that they will be releasing a more expensive version of Everquest 2 designed specially to target new and unsuspecting players and have branded it as EQ2X, the X standing for “Extended Billing Plan”. Not that I’m bitter or anything, no sir. And finally I also had a merry little jaunt down to London to visit some Cockneys and collect my in-laws who are over visiting from Japan. So far I’ve managed to downplay my racial foot-in-mouth disease and have yet to spew some clichéd remark that offends their ancestors. Wait.

The Best Of The Rest: Onwards To London Edition

London at night

London. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Another week in the blogosphere has flown by this time filled with anticipation for my forthcoming holiday which, drum roll please, begins on Wednesday and lasts for an entire week. Woot. For part of it I shall be heading down to London to pick up my in-laws as they fly in from Tokyo and show them the sights there before bringing them up to Scotland. I’m both excited and slightly nervous at the prospect of meeting them again as they don’t speak a word of English and my Japanese is limited to formal greetings, generic stock phrases and sexual commands (don’t ask). All in all, should be a lot of fun though and I’m looking forward to it. And don’t fret, my blogging should mostly continue uninterrupted (I’ll have a few 5 hour train journeys to kill, after all).

The Best Of The Rest: iDish Edition

Eating food of the iDish

Introducing the iDish. Another way to ruin your perfectly good iPad.

As you can see from the image, this weeks BotR is dedicated to Japanese innovation, ingenuity and versatility in the face of new products. Via Kirainet I found this wonderful article about an Otaku who thought to answer the question all iPad owners ponder: “what would happen if I used my iPad as a dish?”. The result saw the birth of the iDish, portable food consumption platform with exchangeable backgrounds. New product for Apple, mayhaps?

Anyway, onward to glory with links from the MMO blogosphere!

The Best Of The Rest: Real ID Forum Fiasco Edition

Real ID card

I have no idea who this guy is (but at least he has a card to tell me)

So much can happen in a week on the Internet. Blizzard went from announcing the mandatory use of Real ID on all of their products forums to rescinding the decision by the weeks end. This change had a little something to do with the huge shit storm they created and the (almost) unanimously negative reaction it received. The screams started on the forums, moved to the blogs and soon hit some rather major news networks around the globe. It’s a nice feeling to know that sometimes public pressure is enough to carry out the will of the people and influence even the biggest of companies.

In attempt to stir up more trouble, here’s a bunch of Real ID related articles from across the blogosphere:

The Best Of The Rest: Why’d You Have To Go And Declare Independence Edition

Independence Day American Flag

The American Flag was created by a Brit. Probably.

Independence Day. Good film. Totally skyrocketed Will Smith’s career for one. Brent Spiner’s in it too, y’know. Hmm, I wonder what’s he up to these days? Oh yeah, it also marks some day when some bunch of colonials decided to break away from the Motherland and form some sort of democratic-country-thingy. Shame really. Imagine where America could’ve been now had it decided to stay within the United Kingdom. You’d all be sipping cups of tea from the finest china with your pinkies hanging in the air. But then I suppose we wouldn’t have had the film Independence Day. And that’s not a sacrifice worth making. Not in my book.

Here are your weekly links. Enjoy them well my pretties, for they’ll have to do you an another entire seven days… Read more →

The Best Of The Rest: Really, I Don’t Know Edition

Really, I Dont Know... Real ID. Bask in my wit, people!

Really, I Don't Know... Real ID. Bask in my wit, people!

Even though Real ID hasn’t hit Europe yet, it was introduced to WoW in the latest patch a few days ago. It’s been met with some positive reactions, some negative ones, and has definitely keep a hot topic over the last week in the MMO blogosphere. Like most things in the gaming world (if not life), the fuss will die down soon and everyone will have forgotten about it. Still, it’s got me wondering what Blizzard have planned for the future. Not so much on a feature level, but now a complete gaming level. Could their Real ID system (which no doubt shall be integrated into Diablo 3 and Blizzard’s next MMO) be a stepping stone for them creating their own gaming monopoly? Guess only time will tell.
