You Should Buy Torchlight 2

Torchlight 2 Engineer

There's nothing like wielding a huge cannon to make me feel like a man

Torchligh 2 is better than Diablo 3. There, I’ve said it. And yes, I know it’s not professional to compared games to each like that but considering I’m just a hobbyist blogger, I figured I can get away with it. So I’ll say this: Torchlight 2 is everything I hoped Diablo 3 was going to be.

This isn’t to say that D3 was a bad game ’cause it wasn’t. It was good, very good in fact, but ultimately, for me at least, it lacked something that Torchlight 2 has in spades – soul. It was like Diablo 3 was so polished, so perfectly inspected, considered, trimmed and balanced that in the process Blizzard forgot to give it any sort of personality or identity. They were so busy trying to force people down their singular vision of gameplay that the game ended up being slightly hollow as an ironic side effect. From its ridiculously easy nature and lack of character customisation to permanent online restriction and game-breaking Auction House, D3 was over-thought and over-worked. Torchlight 2, in comparison, is rough and ready, a by-product of a smaller team and a lower budget and, as a result, it’s a better game for it.

All My Thoughts On SW:TOR

Bounty Hunter

Even evil Bounty Hunters feel the need to chill out in bars

I don’t like doing reviews because I don’t really feel qualified to write them – not as a gamer that is, but as a journalist. I’m far too opinionated and biased to be comfortable scoring games plus MMOs are a huge endeavour and I don’t think reviewing one within a few weeks of release does them justice. Still, I can’t get SW:TOR out of my head (which probably says a lot about how strong a hold it has on me and how good it is) and strangely feel the need to blab my thoughts about it, detailing its many aspects, good and bad. So anyway, I guess this is my so sort of ‘non-review’ review:

Curse of the Worgen #1 Review

Curse of the Worgen

I suppose I could make a pun about Worgen Freeman but that would just be silly

Aside from being a MMO addict I’m also a bit of a comics connoisseur and thus decided to combine both hobbies together and pick up the first issue of Curse of the Worgen which was released in the US yesterday and the UK today. In the interest of brevity for all you busy city slicker lawyer readers out there, I shall summarise the book in a mere single word: meh.

Starcraft 2 Bullet Point Review

Starcraft 2

After watching War of the Worlds for a 5th time, the Protoss decided to create the Colossus

Yes, I’ll admit it, much of my spare time has been occupied by Starcraft 2 recently. I don’t play that many single player games these days (MMORPGs are a full time hobby after all) but every so often one comes along that totally absorbs me and proves a nice change of pace from the traditional fantasy MMO. SC2 has definitely seized my attention by grabbing me by the gonads, leaning into my face and snarling ferociously so I thought it would be nice to share my thoughts about it in review form. Of course, seeing as we’re all busy folk, I’ve decide to write everything in nice concise bullet points. Think of it as a review by tweets.

Going Off Topic With Blogs

In this article I waffle on about going off topic.

In this article I waffle on about going off topic.

In order to help man the fort whilst he’s away at Slayage (I’m not jealous… nope, not one bit…), I wrote a guest post for Professor Beej which he published today. The article is a departure from my usual sexually repressed MMORPG related posts and is a review of a Japanese book I’d just finished called “Out”. Although I love MMOs, I have to admit that it was refreshing to take a break and write about something on a totally different subject. It’s not often that I get to opportunity to stretch my literary muscles and explore an unfamiliar genre, something which no doubt other bloggers feel the same desire to do on occasion too.

Remote Auction House Review

The theme music to The Apprentice plays whenever I use the Remote Auction House

The theme music to The Apprentice plays whenever I use the Remote Auction House

It’s been a week since I posted my initial impressions of the Remote Auction House for WoW and figured it would be a good time to write up a more in-depth review. Yeah, I know, writing a review while the product is still in beta… the horror. Good thing that never happens about anything in the gaming industry.

Age Of Conan – Returning Review

Sometimes R.E. Howard was inspired by Asian culture and sometimes he just ripped it off completely.

Sometimes R.E. Howard was inspired by Asian culture. And sometimes he just ripped it off completely.

I’ve been playing Age of Conan again since the new expansion Rise of the Godslayer came out about three weeks ago and thought it would be a good time to write up my impressions of how the game’s progressed since I left almost 18 months ago. Returning to this virtual world of Hyboria is a bit like hooking up again with that sultry Mexican temptress who you dumped after discovering she had the personality of a piece of wood. Well, the good news is that this fiery lady has had some schoolin’ and can now hold a pretty decent conversation over breakfast following a night of fast-paced combo action. Oh and I know.. me, blog, sex, chauvinism… I just count my lucky stars that my wife doesn’t read this crap.
